Nightmare roof issues.

Hi! I'm new here and had an awful few weeks. Basically, we have had some very very poor work on our home and we don't know what to do!

Friends recommended a company who did a good job converting their conservatory roof from polycarbonate to lightweight tiles roof system.

We contacted the company who did a survey and we were happy to go ahead as they seemed good. Quoted 5k.

Work commenced on time and we paid 30% as requested on the first day of installation. The main roof internal and external conversion we were told would take two days, with final product including painting to be complete in 7-10 days.

Near the end of the first day, we noticed the workers looking puzzled, although they did not communicate any issues with us. When they showed us the work at the end of day one we were horrified!! It looked awful and there was holes and rough joins everywhere in our roof. Immediately told them we were not happy and they actually agreed with us that it did not look good!!!

We spoke with management who advised that they would get someone else out to look at the work, although the manager tried to tell us that he thought the work was acceptable!! Even though his own workers agreed with us that their work was awful.

The team continued with the internal conversion of plasterboard and insulation , which they also messed up, despite the fact that we voiced concerns about a possible issue. They ignored our concerns. The next day when the plaster arrived he immediately saw the issue we pointed out and told us he could not do the plaster!!

Waited days for a different roofer and plasterer to arrive and attempt to fix the mess left by the first team! He told us the work was bad and although he managed to "fix" the issue with plasterboard,in the end we could not get the full insulation as promised.
When the roofer attempted to fix the outside roof, he said he could not fix it!! So he left.
By this time we were so upset and felt the whole roof would have to come off and be started again, although management refused this and said they would just pull back tiles and neaten it up.
Management organised a third team to attempt to fix the outside... they arrived and they seemed shocked at the awful mess and they couldn't understand why the first team made the roof this way. Although these roofers managed to make it look neater, we ALL agreed that it still didn't look great. But we were assured that this was the best that could be done.
Me and my partner strongly felt we should not pay full price due to the awful appearance and all the issues we had. The company would not negotiate and kept ordering us to pay the full 5k immediately. They were rude and tried to imply it was our fault that it all went wrong and they seemed annoyed that they had to use extra resources to get the roof fixed!!!

On the same day we sent photos of the roof to an expert in these type of roof systems!! He said our roof was the worst he had EVER seen!! He told us that the pitch looked wrong too. Therefore we spoke to the company that supplied the roof tiles who confirmed that our pitch was too shallow which would void or warranty and we had a risk of water ingress.

We checked the pitch over and over and found out it is only 10 degrees when the tiles used required a minimum of 15 degrees. We also found a big gouge in our wall that has not been filled from where they made a gouge for the lead flashing.

The only way to fix this pitch issue is for the whole roof to come off :( so while initially we would be willing to accept a reduction in price, we are now not willing to pay another penny due to the issues being worse than first thought..., we now no longer trust the original company so we are going to have to get another company to do the work.

We have sent a letter to advise that the roof needs to come off and asked that they remove it, along with every bit of material used and went in to detail about the pitch issue. We also want them to fix our wall, which is going to be damaged when the lead flashing has to be removed.

We absolutely do not want to pay them another penny as the whole project needs to be started again at a great cost to us. We are not talking about minor issues but a failure from day one. They have told us they will send debt collectors round and keep saying they are going to charge us extra for taking too long to pay. Bear in mind that the work was only completed five days ago.

They seemed very worried when we told them we were getting a third party to survey their work.

Their contract states that we must pay full amount if the issues are minor. But these issues are major and mean we have to get another company to start again, not to mention the fact we will now be left with holes in our conservatory and harling when the roof has to be removed!!

Do we have to pay them the rest of the money ?? We strongly feel that they should refund us the 30% we already paid due to the extra costs we will have to pay.

Please help we are really stressed! They are even denying that we ever said we were unhappy, even though we have documented everything.

Get two independent companies to assess the situation and give you a price to rectify it.

Tell the original company that thyr need to correct ALL the issues and put it right. If they cannot do this, you will instruct the cheapest of the two quotes you obtained, and they will be paying any costs to rectify it.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • i totally agree with pinkshoes. Don't let this firm bully you.
Have you also contacted trading standards.
You can get 30 mins free legal advise from most solicitors who will also advise you what to do if the firm don't agree to put things right,

    Holy thread necromancy, Batman!

This is a thread from 16 months ago, started by a 1-post-wonder who logged off less than an hour after starting this thread and never came back!
  • Makes you wonder though, why the OP went to the huge effort of posting such a large amount of info, and clearly wanted help, but never came back.
  • Probably too busy running around with buckets to be able to post.
