Replacement Remote Car key
Just wondered if anyone has used the Timpsons service to have a spare key cut for their car? If so what was the cost?
Had a fright last week when I had thought I lost my keys, I found them eventually but I have no wish to go through that again.
The car is 2012 Astra with a remote fob and swivel blade key combined.
TIA

You'll be lucky if Timpsons can do the required coding in the key...best ask them first. You do have the code, don't you??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I got a quote from them once on a Renault Kangoo. It was more than the car was worth. Shop around. There's usually a mobile service that is cheaper, but you'll do well to get it done for under £1000

We were £145 for a replacement key, and recoding the spare.
That was a Kia Cee'd.
Guy came to the house and done it.0 -
To get a new key programmed properly you will need someone to physically program it at your car so i doubt this is something that a lot of Timpsons would offer. Whatever you do don't get any kind of key that they produce in the shop from your existing key. This will simply be a clone of your current key so if you loose your key then there is no way of stopping this key from unlocking your car so you would have to replace both your keys anyway. But i'm not sure if this is still possible with modern keys.
If you currently on have one key then as GunJack said you will also likely need a security code to allow an extra key to be programmed to the car.0 -
The best they can do is clone your key, if you then lose the master key you wont be able to remove it from the cars ecu.
So someone will be able to steal your car.
If you get a new key coded to the car then you can delete the key to prevent it starting the car.
Delete the original key and it also deletes the clone.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I lost my only key, 2006 Megane, guy came and supplied 2 keys and programmed to car, I had previously been quoted £60 for one replacement key.
It took him less than 10 minutes.
If you can barter the price against another supplier, the price comes way down.0 -

Could be OK but I note he says

A lot depends on the make of car. Several independents stated that a new key and fob for my Mazda MX5 could only be done by a Mazda dealership, and this did indeed turn out to be the case. They had the car for about an hour at a cost of £285.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Renault key cards are easy to programme though. Its when you have a key to cut as well that the problems arise.0
