Post isn't cheap these days. I see basic PAYG mobile phones in ASDA from around £10 and calls cost 8p per minute. I suppose the problem would be if Mum could not remember how to use one or to charge it.
Post isn't much good for summoning help in an emergency. People with dementia are at increased risk of having falls. In time, if not now, a telecare service may be required (or at least a pendant/wrist panic button that connects via the house phone) and that would require a land line.0 -
Cost of line rental from major suppliers to decrease for those without broadband.

BT currently has Home Phone Saver 2020 for £21.99 per month fixed for those without broadband which includes calls and some additional calling features. The new rules should be more attractive to those who make few calls.
