Heard back from the dealers with some super positive news
The warranty people will cover the gearbox fix. I do have to pay for the cost of a new clutch as something has leaked from the gearbox and caused it to slip. Apparently the warranty peeps wont cover that as I was able to drive the car there. The woman at the dealer said that since they had to take it off/out/whatever to sort the gearbox I'll just need to pay for parts which is a fab £84. Proper chuffed.
Should be able to pick car up on Monday, good as new.0 -

TBh it would make sense to consider a new clutch while it was open anyway.
Even if it wasnt contaminated.0 -

Sorry to misinform you then, my bad! Glad it's sorted. :T0 -
That's what my OH said. I'm not arguing it at all; about to get a beer before trying to bribe one of my cousins to look after Grandad for me
Your OH is spot on. Unless you know the clutch has been changed recently it is always worth replacing it if the gearbox has to come off as a matter of routine because labour costs on a modern car to change a clutch are a good few hundred quid nowadays as its usually at least a half a day job.
Input shaft seal has probably gone because the bearings inside the gearbox have failed resulting in lots of play. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Just to answer another question in the OP - many finance companies will allow over payments without penalty - mine does, so worth checking the paperwork or calling the finance company. 5 years seems a long time to be paying off a car that's already 5 years old0

Did not expect bickering over a question but thanks everyone who helped out
You obviously haven't spent enough time on this section of the MSE forums. If somebody asked what colour their indicator lamps should be, then one person would say orange, another would call them stupid, because it should be amber, and somebody else would insist they should be pink and that everybody else is wrong. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

Or annoying, depending on the issue and the posters.0
