Used car and manufacturers warranty.

Went to a very large car supermarket to see a 2014 Renault Clio.
I had looked on Renault's main web site and it said that any Renault
bought or registered after 1/2/2012 came with a 4 year warranty.

My wife loved it.

Asked at the sales desk if they could confirm that the car still had nearly a years Manufacturers Warranty left.It was registered on 5/10/2014.

They checked and said it was only 3 years, something to do with the previous owner they said.(I overheard a leasing company mentioned).
Couldn't understand it.

I just wonder if anyone could shed any light on it?
