I'm thinking of getting a puppy as I've a lot of spare time. I have owned a dog before so I know that research is important to get right dog. Thinking of a westie puppy. Seems like it would fit perfectly in my household. The only drawback is lots of websites state they are dogs that bark alot. Has anyone experience of westies and are they yappy dogs or is it just a matter of training correctly. Any more advice on this breed welcome.

Do tell me to bog off if you want,:o but have you ever considered a dog like a sealyham or a glen of imaal. Similar style to a westie, but both in danger of dying out, whereas there are 7-8000 westies regiestered every year.

My friend has one, he is a crazy little thing (in a good way).
I have a cocker spaniel (1 year old) and they play very well together.
    No barking from either.

Personally I believe its how your train/bring up the dog, whether it barks a lot.

I'm currently training my dog to bark on command, its good fun and i'm nearly there.

In a feisty way I believe. I've not had one myself but he was full of character and certainly no wall-flower, whereas my massive Leonbergers are very shy.

She does say he was one of the best dogs she ever had so I take that as a good thing.

I'm having a look at both of these. Seem a bit beyond my price range though.

We have a Yorkie/Pomeranian who is almost 7 years old.

He's a feisty little fella, with lots of attitude and is definitely a barker. As we go outside, he weighs up the situation and barks to show who is boss!

Although we have tried to stop him, he still chews up the mail if we have failed to keep him out of the hall, and can be quite aggressive to other dogs.

We have previously had two large rough collies, but Barney our small Yorkie/Pom is proving to be harder work than they ever were. We take him for long walks and play ball regularly, and love him to bits.

    Good luck

One across the way regularly barks at about 5am and the two above bark if anyone passes the house , though their yorkie companion does not and we always know if the lady behind is walking past with her westie , if she meets another dog as she (the dog) has a go, too.

Like all breeds temperament will vary. Some will be barkers and some not.

Skin problems are a problem in the breed so choose carefully.

Also, consider a rescue westie. That way you will know if it a barker or not.
