Halifax Rip Off

My wife recently made a puchase on her Halifax debit card at a local shop but on making the purchase it first came up failed then on a second try the payment went through.A few days later she got a mini statement out of the bank and to her horror Halifax had taken 2 payments for the same item.Due to this double payment she will now go overdrawn through no fault of her own.We have contacted the Halifax who were quite abrupt and first tried to blame it on my wife then on the shop.As luck has it my wife works in the shop and on informing them of this this they have said they are witholding the payment and a covering letter from the shop will allow them to release the funds back in to her account right away. This is about the 5th time this has happened with the halifax so customers beware. This is just another dirty trick by the banks to try and steal our hard earned cash!

Do you think the bank is deliberately declining your wife's card and then allowing it to give more money to the retailer?
I've had this problem once in 4 years and it was the shop who apologised as the card had been swiped twice in error by the assistant trying to get it to work.
I have a lot of things to say about HBOS but how do they benefit by giving away your wife's money to retailers?0 -

i had a similar problem with the Woolwich and a transaction with Argos, I got it sorted same day, as there was only £12 in account, the 1st time the transacaton attempted to go through it rejected at the end, tried again, kept rejecting, so rand the Woolwich and for some reason, the 1st transaction had gone through, each organisation was saying it was the others problem, in the end argos had to admit defeat as complained that they did not believe me and demanded that they let me use their phoneto ring the bank, gave the bank permission to say the money had gone from the account, Argos backed down and gave me £15. worth of vouchers for the inconvience.
So hold on there and comlain!xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
Is the OP mentally !!!!!!?
this is not hbos's fault, it is the retailers, and therefore its the retailer who should sort it
Hbos did your wife a favour by releasing it with the letter, as they didnt need to do this
Its not their responsibility to sort retailer mistakes
Frankly If you'd took that attitude with me Id have went out of my way to cause you as much inconvenience as possible0 -

Whose 'fault' it was can be tracked down to whether or not the shop's terminal got a confirmation of the first payment (and was missed) or didn't. In the first case it IS the fault of the shop - in the latter case it must be someone else's. Who is responsible for EPOS information? Is it the bank (Halifax) to confirm funds in the customer's account and to release the goods? Or is it the responsibility of a third party network (VISA)? They're generally pretty reliable.
I suspect this can be pinned on the shop's mistake - that there was an authorisation but somehow they missed it - and that they should cover this. Generally large co.s are going to make the little man pay for this sort of error - since the little man hardly has the option of losing their EPOS these days. But once in a while a system error can occur and then what should you do?.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -
Many threads are titled "RIP OFF" here on MSE ! 99 out of 100 of these so called "RIP OFFS" are caused by the ignorance of those posting and not understanding what they've got themselves into OR by a genuine mistake which can be easily rectified.
Some people just like to make a mountain out of a mole hill !!0
