Hi Everyone,
I went for an interview for an admin job at an academy today. The interview went really well and I really enjoyed myself. Now I'm sitting at home, quietly trying to work out how much money I will be taking home every month.
The annual salary is advertised as £17k which is 35 hours a week and 40 weeks per year, however it is Pro-Rota and I'm not sure how much tax I'm likely going to be paying.
At the moment I'm taking away £1250 per month for 40 hours pw (plus the extra 7 I work) so I'm not sure how this new job (should I be successful) will compare !?
Thanks,
Andy

I HATE pro rata adverts, as people never (well, hardly ever) make it clear whether what you receive is a pro rata proportion of £17k, or whether 17k has already been pro-rataed.
Assuming the latter, surely it's very easy to use a calculator such as https://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php ?Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
School wages would work something like this
£17000 (salary) x 35/37? (hours worked/ft hours, I guessed 37) x 40/52.14 (weeks worked/weeks per year)= salary
HOWEVER you will also get some paid annual leave which you take during school holiday, but this depends on your contract. If it's five weeks leave then it would be 45/52.14.0 -
Thanks you both. I have worked out the following (please correct me if I'm wrong)
Note: I've actually used the actual figures which were a little different to the ones in my head earlier !!
Annual Pay:
17,772
Per month after tax and NI
(104.53 Tax 96.08 NI)
1280.39
\52 x40 (40 weeks work) =984.91
X12 = 11,818.92
Current pay after tax 13,441.32
Worse off £143.20 per month
But now, am I better being worse off but only working 40 weeks per year ... hmmmm .....0 -

Do you currently have membership of a 1/49 CARE pension scheme (or better)? Genuine question - if you are comparing with a private sector job, the pension should be very much part of the calculation.0 -
If you are actually working those 40 weeks per year then you will still have paid leave on top though. That should be approximately another 28 days pay.0

But you won't pay the same tax/NI as someone earning £17,772."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -
Thanks for your replies
- I'm 23 so I haven't really even thought about my pension. I'm currently paying £14 per month into NEST.
- The job is adverstised as 40 weeks per year, so after reading i will get another months (approx) pay, so another 4 weeks ? My sums are now 43 weeks pay per year.
- NI / Tax ... I can't find anything, anywhere to tell me how much tax to expect to pay on my earnings. What I suspect would happen in reality is that I pay the tax on the £17,778 and then get a juicy rebate at the end of the year ?
HELP !!0 -

OP - if your new job does come with the option of joining the LGPS then you'd be daft not to go for it. Yes, you'll pay more than your current £14 per month, but you'll get back so much more than from a NEST scheme.0 -
You might still work in the holidays too as there's still some staff in due to being open, if they hire the school out etc.:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one
