please help- philips x50 laptop

Options
i need advice-it comes with xp but ive heard reports that you cant upgrade it to vista as the hard drive is somehow locked? i can get one of these very cheaply but if its not upgradeable to vista i wont bother. Philips deny they even make laptops ?!?! so i can't ask them, please help!
Also it only comes with 512 ram, how much to up it to a gig, and is it easy enough to do it yourself?
lastly, it only has a pentium m processor (im willing to sacrifice the performance as i need a small laptop sub £300 and this is the only one that fits the bill) is pentium m worse than celeron m? i currently have celeron 1.8, i think the x50 has pentium m either 1.6 or 1.7. Celeron m is plenty fast enough for me

  • Pentium are generally better than Celeron.

There seems to be a few problems with touchpads on theses laptops and I can't find anywhere that you can upgrade to Vista.

I doubt you'd get much support from Phillips if anything went wrong either.

I've emailed Pc world because i found out its made by them and not Philips- i've never heard of a computer you cant change the o/s on before?
Also, there are no drivers available online so if i reformat, well, you get the picture?

I've never heard of such a thing as a 'locked hard drive'. Where are these reports you refer to?

A bigger question to answer would be why do you want to upgrade it to Vista? Is there something in Vista that you need?

I spent all yesterday googling that model and everyone seems to be saying either it isn't compatible or they get errors when trying to install to the sata hard drive.
i don't see the point in getting into the xp/vista debate- i simply prefer vista (i have both)
if i do buy this model i'm hoping to keep it for a long time and i want it to be vista compatible.
