Discharged can't get credit card.

Hi guys,

I was discharged from bankruptcy on 14.06.17. I am now in the process of cleaning up my file. All on my debts are at a 0 balance and showing settled. I got a basic bank account with BOS and a mobile phone contract with EE during my bankruptcy. I also got a guarantor loan with amigo 2 days after my discharge.

I have 3 CCJS all granted 3 weeks before my bankruptcy application was approved. They are still showing active on my CRAs is this right?.

I am trying to get a bad credit credit card but I'm having no luck. I stupidly applied to Vanquis 3 days before my discharge was declined. I then tried for a cash plus account 2 months later and was declined (no credit search). Next I tried Capital one and was declined on final checks. On 21.09.17 Vanquis reappeared with an 80% acceptance rate and found out 3 weeks later it was declined. Now Capital one is showing as 100% acceptance.

I don't know what is stopping me being accepted can anyone help?

Thanks Ersk.

loathe to make any applications if the liklihood is rejection

  • mmmm- that may be shooting from the hip a bit-plenty of advice on this forum and elsewhere on the benefit of efficiently manging a credit card for your credit file?
  • @zx81 do you have any information on what has to be done with ccjs after discharge?

100% for Capital One is good, it could be worth another go. Your credit file is already trashed so another search isn't going to make much difference. Other than that you could try JD Williams catalog account they give accounts to discharge bankrupts

Surely a guarantor loan two days after your discharge doesn't sound like much of a boost to your financial situation with a view to a mortgage in the future.

  • I would guess it's down to affordability plus the fact that you already have a loan so soon after discharge. Whether it's the case or not, potential lenders may see you as desperate for credit again.

You would be much better paying off the loan if you can and trying for a credit card in a few months. At least then you can spend on the card and pay off in full each month without paying a ridiculous amount of interest.
  • CCJs will remain on your file as outstanding (even though legally they aren't).

Mortgage lenders will take that into account, assuming they all pre-date bankruptcy.

Automated credit scoring should, but may not!

    95% with who? Cap1 etc!?

I'd not trust any offer that's not pre-approved to be honest....that's from a lot of experience since I've been bankrupt!

If you have high salary go for it, 1 search isn't going to make a difference, but if it's average or below, then I'd be surprised (unless they think you're a good target to make money from!)

Secured loan will almost certainly be viewed as a guarantor loan - even the rip off people who did my car loan wouldn't have done it 2 days after discharge!!! They know you simply have to be desperate to get a reasonable amount of credit 2 days after discharge.

If it was £250/500 Cap1 etc then fair enough, but if it's a secured loan I'm assuming it's at least £1,000 - there's no way that'd be given unsecured so soon afterwards.
