Tree felling and stump grinding

This morning I had a quote to remove a very large Willow from the garden. It is close to the house and covers the electricity supply cables coming into the house. I asked them to quote for felling the tree, taking the wood away and removing the stump.

They quoted 375 pounds, and I accepted. They have just phoned to book a date and after agreeing a date, told me that the stump grinding will be done by an associate, who will quote separately and it will be about 75 pounds!

I feel very indignant about this.

Can anyone offer me some advice.Thanks.

If you hold off for a few weeks / months until the tree has shed its leaves, the price may be substantially cheaper.

The Tree surgeon we use bases his prices largely on the number of loads he has to dispose of.

In my experience £75 is reasonable for the stump grinding.

Your idea of a large tree, will probably be different to mine, but we pay our Tree Surgeon £250 for a large tree. However, this is mates rates cash in hand, based on a long established relationship, with us putting a good bit of work his way.

Your quoted £375 therefore doesnt seem too unreasonable.

    Thanks.

It is'nt the price that I am upset about, but the disingenious way in which they quoted it to me. Giving no hint that it was not 'all in' when they gave the quote.

I agree that the price sounds OK, if it's too much you could just pollard the willow - saving on stump grinding and probably a bit on the surgery side too.

I understand how miffed you can feel!

As I say, the price should be less once the tree has lost its leaves, so you could maybe save the £75 that way.

Alternatively, Depending on the location, you may be quite happy with leaving a stump & save your £75.

If for example, it is at the back of the garden, & will be overgrown with bushes, a stump flush (or near flush) with the ground may be completely acceptable to you.
