Route avoiding Sutton Bank?

We will be travelling up the A1(m) going to Oswaldkirk but as we have a caravan we cannot use a section of the A170.
I cannot see an obvious route so need local knowledge please?

  • (1) You will have to go via Byland Abbey/Coxwold/Ampleforth. Brown English Heritage signs for Byland off the A19.

    OR

    (2) Join the A64 (from the M1 or A1), turn onto the York bypass (A1237) just before York, then after several roundabouts, onto the Helmsley Road (B1363) which takes you via Stillington, Sutton on the Forest, Brandsby, Gilling East and Oswaldkirk.

Personally I would go via Coxwold, just because its more scenic, Byland Abbey is a gem. If you want to visit Rievaulx Abbey you can use this road too (just not with a caravan, their carpark isn't that big). Glad to see there are some sensible caravaners not using Sutton Bank (scares the !!!! out of me in my Toyota!)

Many thanks GothicStirling just the information I was looking for.
Only recently changed to a bigger fixed bed caravan so checking routes carefully.
now all we need is some fine weather this weekend and next week, can anyone arrange that please?

Alternative route would be to stay on the A64 all the way past York heading towards Malton, then take the turn for Castle Howard/Slingsby, at Slingsby follow the B1257 to Oswaldkirk - that is probably the quickest/shortest route but it would depending on what time/day you are travelling for example the A64 is best avoided on a Friday evening/Saturday morning as everyone heads for the coast - although that is starting to calm down now we are into the back end of October.

Don't use the A64 if its Friday afternoon then, I think its half term as well next week so there will certainly be a half hour jam somewhere along that route.

The caravan rote avoiding Sutton Bank is well signposted from the A168 travelling towards Thirsk from the A1.

It will be fine with your caravan and as said above don't go near the A64 around York on a Friday! I work in York and live about 2 miles from Sutton bank BTW.

Well we are now nice and snug in our caravan near Oswaldkirk.
We came off the A1(M) at J49, went towards Thirsk then A19 South. Turned off to Coxwold, Ampleforth and here.
Not a lot of traffic and easy roads with the caravan.
Thanks for advice everyone, now planning the next few days sightseeing.
