Free loft insulation - free for everyone?!?! (very cold house)

So, last week I spotted the "Loft insulation - free for everyone" on the front page of MSE so off I went to try to get some.

After going to various big electricity providers (EOn, NPower, etc) & filled out the relevant online questionnaire but none of them will give me insulation.
Apart from these providers can anyone recommend who I can try for free loft insulation?

I'm a home-owner, mid-terraced house, concrete panel walls... & VERY cold house! night storage heaters :/
I work full-time, earning over £20k.

I pay £95pcm throughout the year so I don't have to worry about how much I use over winter, when the house becomes an ice-bucket (with no champagne)!

Thanks for any advice!

Try looking up local insulation companies on your town/county councils trusted trader register. If there's funding available they will be able to apply for it on your behalf. We had a couple come quote for us around this time 2015. The first said they didn't think we were eligible and gave us a (reasonable) quote. The second said we were and gave us the paperwork to have them do it for free.

Even if you can't find anyone who can get it in for free for you, you might find one that's cheap enough that you just go for that instead.

One thing to bear in mind. If you already have some insulation, and it's just inadequate (ie 25mm instead of 300mm), some companies may say you're not eligible and others may say they can only top-up to 300 for free

What are the reasons you are being provided for refusal of your application for free loft insulation?

Edit: Do you have a link to waht you saw on MSE?

Whilst it suggests it's available to all, that means you do not need to be a customer of the supplier, but it does also says you have to meet their eligibility criteria.

I am only posting because some people reading the above part of your post may be lulled into a feeling of complacency. As I am sure you know, fixed energy tariffs are not costed on the basis of 'all you can eat for £95 per month'. The £95 per month is taken to be 1/12 of your total projected cost based on a given kWh/year usage and postcode. It is nothing more than a best guess. Use more then the projected amount, and you will pay more.

If we get a repeat of 1962/63 Winter - which lasted from the 22nd December to the 4th March with sub zero temperatures for most of the time - then I would hate people to think that just because they are on a fixed contract and paying by DD that everything will be fine. Sadly, that just isn't the case.

Great advice, & thanks for the heads up. I know I have insulation up there but it looks really thin. I guess I should measure it before I go asking around. Thanks again!

Hi, I wish I knew, I've tried changing a few different things to see why I'm being refused but not getting very far! I'll try a few local companies later.
    Thank you for your reply
