Halifax today brought my account balance back to £0 on my Clarity card and returned the surplus balance to my current account.

On top of this they advised that the fees added to my account would be refunded and while they were accepting no blame for what happened they accepted that the process was poor and confusing which is in the process of being changed - due to this a £40 settlement offer was made.

    ??????

what is confusing about it? it couldn't be more simple or intuitive

I also think this is very clear - you can only transfer from the accounts in the drop down list and if there isn't cleared funds there the transfer will be rejected.

Quite what OP did we still don't know.

My money is on op having already made a payment since the statement was produced then selecting "statement balance". Halifax have probably made the £40 goodwill payment as their system in this situation will overpay by default even though the previous payment would have reduced the regular DD amount.

DD are treated differently by credit card companies, checking mine some say the DD will be taken irrespective of any additional payments, and some say the amount taken will take into consideration other payments.

However the OP says the DD was due to come out on 28th, was that of September, and if so when was the manual payment made, or was it October in which case DD system has nothing to do with what occurred.
