Do I need to obtain probate?

I am co-executor of my father's will who passed recently.
Prior to his death, all of his assets from a number of financial institutions were consolidated at a single bank (Barclays).
His house was owned as joint-tenants with his wife and thus has passed directly to her on his death.
There are no other assets other than his personal chattels all of which pass to his wife.
Barclays, (who on the face of it have been very helpful) have stated that they will not require probate to release the small amount of consolidated cash that he had in deposits with them (approx £17k).
Does this mean that probate does not have to be applied for?

The situation was similar when my Mum died - we didn't have to get probate for her.

Yes you are correct, probate is not required. A solicitor can update the title for you or you can probably do it your self.

There is no rush to update the title, it will be easily dealt with when the house is next sold if you want to leave it.

Same situation when my Mum passed away. Probate was not needed but we were advised to change the title deeds as soon as possible to save any delays when selling the property at a later date.
