Email a few local solicitors, I needed one recently and the quotes ranged from £180 + VAT to £450 + VAT both from my local town.

The £180 one was fine and I now have a template in case any other beneficary wants to use one.

Yes, if he takes the inheritance he will be well into IHT territory. If he doesn't take it he will probably be just under.

Have you included residential nil rate band and transferable nil rate bands for your fathers estate?

    What about your own estate?
  • hi, I know your thread is few years old but I would be interested if you still had a copy of the deed of variation you have, I have to do one for my son and although I understand it only has to be as a letter I want to make sure I cover all bases, thanks.

As you say, the thread is almost 2 years old.

OP hasn't been around for a while

You would probably have more success if you start a new thread.

If you are drafting your own then follow the checklist:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/inheritance-tax-instrument-of-variation-checklist-iov2

And make sure you include the following:

[FONT=Tahoma, sans-serif]“The parties to this variation intend that the provisions of section 142(1) Inheritance Tax Act 1984 and section 62(6) Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 shall apply”
