We use a mix of Clarity, Caxton preloaded (for cash withdrawals) and cash itself.

Why not just use the Clarity for everything? The cheapest way to get cash is to withdraw it from an ATM after you arrive, and the Clarity card is cheaper for cash withdrawals than Caxton.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
  • A bit of cash (tips, taxis, small cafes) + Halifax Clarity for most stuff, plus an 'emergency' second card

We used the Clarity a lot in the USA. It worked on their contactless systems well. I got a better exchange rate than if I'd got cash at home.

Take the clarity, some cash and a secind card as a backup. Why dont you do what you believe is the riģht thing. Whats wrong with coming home with some euros, keep them for when you go again.

It's not like they go out of date!

I imagine some poor person from Belgium stuck with useless old £5 notes now
  • Clarity is a good choice. Get yourself a Starling bank debit card as well. You can withdraw local currency free overseas and you will get Mastercard’s Exchange rate.
