    Hi all.........
But I would also like to diversify. Property? Bitcoin? Gold? ETFs? I can hopefully leave the money in whatever investment I choose for a reasonable length of time.........
    Many thanks.
Property......only the one your living in. Make your first aim to clear the mortgage.
    Bitcoin.......a joke.
Gold.....on a time scale of five years plus, an excellent choice, you could even go with gold ETF’s in an isa. UK gold coins are tax free going in and out.

It would be better if you changed your image to a pirate.

The nature of gold as an investment means it is often used as a hedge against market risks. In strong markets gold will inevitably lag behind equities without offering low volatility or downside protection. Though it would be expected to spike in the event of a market crash or geopolitical unrest, it would retrace again as soon as equity becomes attractive again. You'd be mad to invest all you have in gold - look at the performance of Crispin Odey's funds since early 2016.

It can have a place in an asset allocated portfolio but at no more than 5%.
  • Thank you all, more useful info and more reading to do.

Boston, my pension is DC, with Legal & General, and is in their multi asset fund 3. I contribute 3%, my employer contributes 2%, though I think that will rise to 3% next year, or the year after. My contributions have to be 5% by 2019.
