Ashbourne Membership Management

Joined the gym as most people do in January, paid my membership for that month on the day I joined and then carried on paying the same amount each month since then. I've just been in touch to find out when my membership ends so I can finally cancel the direct debt. Apparently that first month's payment doesn't count as part of my 12 month membership and my last direct debit comes out on the 9th January, effectively allowing me to use the gym up until the 9th February (I don't use the gym now by the way) Is that the way these gym memberships are supposed to work? Doesn't that technically make it 13 months?
