  • Well, I’ve spent a good amount of the weekend either looking for PS3 60GB stock, or on ebay, looking at listings, pondering over bidding, making a few bids and loosing out. I’ve seen the 60GB model shift from between 360 and 620 quid, excluding the shipping costs.

Anyway, despite at one point watching 40 PS3 listings, I’ve decided not to get one just yet. Why, you ask?

Well, if you look at the wikipedia entry for playstation 3, URL:

you can see in chart after title retail configurations, the UK has had two models to date, the 40GB and the now discontinued 60GB.

I’ve read rumours that Sony may add PVR functionality to the Playstation 3 next year. At a rough estimate, you need 2GB per hour of recording so a 60GB PS3 would only hold a maximum of 30 hours recordings, probably less due to needing some space for game saves, downloaded demos etc. So 60GB isn’t looking that good. Plus 60GB isn’t such a big size now and they can probably source larger drives at similar prices.

So, my current theory is that Sony will release a new PS3, probably around the anniversary of the UK launch, ie March 2008, with either 80GB or 120GB space, plus perhaps optional, digital tuner enabling the PS3 to become a PVR / hard disc recorder.

    Could be completely wrong though.

Anyway, sorry for the distractions. Back to the mortgage next week. Honest!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only naughty boy. I bought a Nintendo Wii for the kids () off ebay for £280. I paid well over the odds, but after losing bids on several Wii's at the last minute I went with a Buy It Now price. Not very MSE, I'm afraid.

I've told our eldest that they're impossible to get hold of and too expensive off ebay, so we'll have to get one in the New Year. Though, everytime I see a PS3 advert on telly I go "ohhh, look at the graphics on that! Much better than those rubbish Wiis", just to wind her up :)

Our credit cards are getting a bit of a pasting this Christmas, so MFi3 is now on hold until January :(

Still, it's not all about scrimping and saving is it?

  • I don't muck around, do I?

To be honest, I did have a few ebay bids on some PS3's hoping I'd get an, ahem bargain, but clearly I couldn't bring myself to put a high enough amount in to win an auction.

Colleague at work, that would be the same colleague that's got an X-box 360, PS3 and Wii, (us IT bods like our toys) tipped me off that PC World had stock.

Game choices were quite limited (about 5 different games) unless I stumped up extra cash for a 3 game selection or another 75 notes for an "ultimate" pack. Ended up with motor storm and genji.

From a quick play on motor storm, the sixaxis controller is going to take some getting used to.

So yes, I've just spent 349.99, but it could have been much worse, especially as I was at one point bidding on a PS3 that ended up @ 620 quid plus 25.00 postage

As dithering dad says, it'll be frugal living for a while after Christmas until the spending is under control again.

    Regards,

My theory is that a console helps to save money. A good game can seriously suck time and a night spent playing a decent game is a good alternative to a £60 trawl round bars and pubs and a taxi etc now and again.

What are you blokes like with your consoles?
We've got a Wii for the entire family for Christmas and for DH's birthday.
DH went on and on about getting one and then refused point blank to wait for me to go shopping with him so he ended up buying one ages ago for £279 with 2 or 3 games but not the sports one. He didn't get any money off or any cashback.
And there's no way it's stretching into my birthday present too as it's my 30th this year (next year) so he can finish my decorating instead!

I had a grim realisation earlier on that we really have not overpaid very much when we take into account the savings that have been depleted and how much should have been cleared. I think we are probably about £640 ahead.

I'm having real issues ATM with DH spending money like it's going out of fashion. The other night I phoned him at work and asked him to pick up a bag of rice on his way home (less than £1) and he came back having spent I don't know how much with a bag full of goodies that we don't need.
Our shopping budget is now blown and I still need to pay for DS's preschool tomorrow at £16.60 and his birthday next week will require some sort of cake. I'm going to make pizzas but will need to buy tomato puree/ passata and cheese at the very least.
At least w've got both ISA's open now so we won't dip into them. Must admit to being concerned about DH's lassaiz fair attitude to budgets though because if theere is no buffer in the current account, he may well go overdrawn and start costing us big money.

Is anyone else getting twitchy now that food seems to be spiralling out of all control- cost wise?
I really need to get the kids out in the front garden with me when they break up next week so that they can help me get this bed put in. Then I can get my front and back veggie plots started up in good time for the planting season.
I've decided not to tell DH what I'm planting- I want it to be a surprise when he see's all the lovely flowers that come with the edible stuff!

  • Quick post.

It's 12/12/07 (just). Exactly 5 years (maximum) until I want our mortgage paid.

So after today, it's 4 years, x months and counting...

Have a few things to chat about, but haven't found the time this evening!

Back to my regular posts tomorrow.

  • @Kaz – yes I understand about the food. With myself generally being at work during the day and mrs bliss not working, she tends to spend the lion’s share of the income, excluding the direct debits of course.

We have a game we play – guess how much I’ve spent at asda today? Well mrs bliss went today and I was way, way off - spent a whopping 156 quid. To be fair, we’re hosting Christmas lunch this year, first time ever – 6 adults and two little’uns, so a lot of that is seasonal spending. Food is a major expense here, although we do try and be careful. No ready meals and we do a lot of our own cooking. #1 stays for lunch @ nursery too, currently at 1.70 a day- about 37.00 a month! This is an area I know we need to tackle in the new year.

Allergies. On a similar line, it was confirmed last week that #1 son has a peanut allergy. Was tested for: almond, brazil, cashew, hazelnut, peanut and walnut. Fortunately, only peanut gave a positive and that said, they have high hopes that he may grow out of the allergy – it’s not a severe allergy. Further tests when he is 5, so providing I’m still posting updates in late 2009, I may have an update.

    Thanks,
