searchable online photos

I'm looking to upload a few thousand jpg photos, should be less than 5gb.

I want to allow other people to access and search these photos by partial filename. (format - yy-mm-dd-surname.jpg)
The results then show the photos.
It's not the most complicated thing to wish for.

1. Tried Google photos -it's rubbish. Far too complicated to use and won't upload small files..
2. Tried dropbox. Others using dropbox can't search unless I pay for the business version at a tenner a month.

So I'm thinking of a softaculous installation on a hosting package I have which has plenty of spare gigabytes.

Any recommendations? The images are newspaper reports from 100 years ago.

You could use flickr and add tags to the images for searching purposes, which IMO (and without knowing exactly what you're doing) would be a better solution than relying on the filenames. Apart from anything else, it would allow you to cover things like common mis-spellings if that helps.

I can't remember what capacity the free flickr hosting is, but I think it's more than 5Gb.

Only thing you have to worry about with a free hosting package (and I realise you didn't specify it had to be free) is whether the host will "do a Photobucket" and turn off your account without any warning.

I presume you have a file with all the image names listed eg spreadsheet? If so could you email that spreadsheet to whoever you want to access the photos and they can use the search options in a spreadsheet eg contains "xyz" to find the photo they want. You could have a hyperlink to each photo alongside its name to make it even easier to download the photo required.

A slideshow using thumbnails on your own website. Works for me.

Simple menu for a category, then thumbnails.

You can get free slideshow scripts, you can just copy and paste the code.

Yes Google photos looks good. I could not get a multiple search of filename to work though say contains A and contains B - is there a way to do that?

I have uploaded tousands of small WhatsApp photos to Google drive so I don't think the size of the file will be an issue.

I second Flickr. I've used it for years, mind you have I have the Pro account which equates to around £18/year. That's not bad for unlimited storage of videos and photos.

The free account has a cap of uploads/day/month and overall limited storage.

A number of features for organising include:
    1. Batch uploads
    2. batch organising
    3. keywords/tags
    4. location tags
    5. adding images to groups
    6. setting permissions per image (public/select/private)
    7. setting copyright: full copyright (viewers can't download) or a selection of creative commons rights (full access/use but not alter etc)
