Can't find PPI on credit card statement

After sending speculative letters out to the various banks I've had credit cards with over the years, I've just had confirmation from MBNA that PPI was applied to a card I'd taken out with Abbey in 2005. By chance I still had a few of the statements filed. Not a full set but about seven statements from 2007 to 2010. I can't find any PPI itemised on the bills. Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking? Could it have been included in the interest charge? Would it have been monthly or annually?

I have submitted a complaint to MBNA to claim the charges but wouldn't mind trying to work out on my own how much I'd paid . Any ideas or advice appreciated!

With credit cards it's entirely possible that you had a PPI policy but never actually paid any PPI. The PPI was only charged when the amount had a balance, so if you paid your credit card off you won't see any on the statements which you still have copies of.

Of course, if you didn't pay PPI then there will be nothing on your statements nor anything to refund.

You may well have been hasty with your "complaint"

Absolutely not. PPI would have been itemised on a separate line each month.

No there were definitely balances on there. I'm starting to wonder if it was possibly only a couple of payments before I cancelled or refused it. PPI was something I tended to refuse and have only started looking into as I found it unexpectedly on an old store card. I guess I'll know soon enough. Thanks for confirmation about what I should be looking for on the statements though!

If it doesn't appear then it was not charged for those particular months.

Doesn't look likely you have much of a PPI refund to look forward to I'm afraid.

You realise that it would have been wise to simply ask this of the bank prior to making any "complaint"?

When we say balance, that means borrowing past the interest free period and not paying it off in full that month.

It was only charged against the balance left on the account at the payment date. Depending on card provider it would appear in thee transaction list or next the interest payment.

  • I didn't go into this expecting a payout. I just wanted to check that I hadn't been paying premiums that I hadn't asked for, which appears to have happened at some point. And the reason I was trying to find the information on my own was that I'd had a conversation with them in about 2010 to confirm ppi wasn't been applied, after receiving some generic leaflet from
them with my statement. But it appears from their reply this week that it was, even if briefly as I suspect. So naturally I'm a bit hesitant about their information. Anyway I have followed their next steps as set out in their letter, which is the complaint procedure.

So you have "complained" about PPI which you may not even have paid?

Did you not realise that it is only possible to construct a robust complaint by prior thorough research?

Did you really "complain" on the basis that you don't know if you paid PPI but, if you did, you want it back?
  • Thank you for your interest and time Moneyineptitude though I feel the conversation has drifted from my original question and has taken, though hopefully I am mistaken, an unkind tone.

    So to clarify:

I did not know if I had PPI on any cards, hence the speculative letters and/or convenient online PPI enquiry form that some banks use. I could have used a claims company too to investigate though the banks made it very easy to enquire myself. I only felt compelled to do this after finding PPI on a statement from an old store card.

To my surprise MBNA has replied that PPI was applied to a credit card, which was contrary to a conversation I had with them in 2010. Their next steps, as specified in their letter, was to complete the perhaps unfortunately named complaints form so they could look further into it for me.

I am trying to do research on my own, as you suggest, by looking at the few previous statements I still have from a now closed account, and asking the supportive and helpful community here on MSE forums for advice on where to look, as I am still unsure where or if PPI was applied. If you glance through various forums there are posts where people have initiated the PPI enquiry process with the FO complaints form and very little information, and still been successful. I appreciate a robust complaint would be made stronger by solid information but people shouldn't be deterred from looking into any potential claims due to limited information they may have.

And yes if I have paid any premiums, I would like to explore if I could have them back as PPI was something I routinely refused.
  • Hi just wondered how you got on with this? I too am in same situation and I also refused ppi, out of interest I asked Canada square operations if I had ppi applied on an egg credit card 2004 they replied yes, I was shocked as I never take out these policies. I then put in a complaint and had a letter back saying they can!!!8217;t find any of the ppi payments so we!!!8217;re not upholding case , I then asked for SAR they sent me every statement from when I opened until balance was paid, nothing on there about ppi... feeling confused how can they say I had ppi but nothing shows on statements?
Just wondered outcome of this thread

I don't think an answer from the OP will be forthcoming, as s/he hasn't logged-into the forum since November 4th 2017.

You could have cancelled it yourself, if it's not on the statements, you didn't pay it. Egg were an online card, normally egg card holders ticked a box to say they wanted PPI, ergo it cannot have been mis-sold unless the wording on the page makes it sound like a recommendation or if the box was pre-ticked (opt-out) but the wording and tick box status is long known so that avenue won't work on a new claim i.e. you can't say that the box was pre-ticked if it's known it wasn't

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
