Returns to sports direct

I bought some clothes from sports direct online and they were too small for my son so I returned them in store and was told that because there was nothing wrong with the items I could only have a credit note for the store and not a refund to my payment method.
Is this correct or should I have been given a refund

    You should have been given a refund as you bought them online.

    Did you inform the store you were cancelling the contract according to the Consumer Contract Regulations or did you just take their word for it? They should also return your postage costs.
    I actually don't see anything that says they accept online returns in store.
    If a full refund including the original delivery costs is required, we need to be informed fourteen (14) days after the receipt of the order. The order must be then returned to us within fourteen (14) days after we have been informed of the cancellation, however you will be responsible for the cost of returns the goods to us. If a return is payable to you we will process the refund as soon as possible and, in any case within fourteen (14) days of receipt of the original order back to us.

    From previous threads I understand that SD online is run separately from high street shops. If you want a refund of an online purchase it should be returned as per their returns policy for online purchases https://www.sportsdirect.com/customerservices/completedorders/returnsandexchanges

    Unless you are 100% sure that the item will fit.
    I've bought stuff online but only after trying the same size and style (different cosmetic design) in store.

    I've never had to return anything.

    I'm always surprised when someone has bought something - either online or in-store - and hasn't checked the returns policy.
    SD website is very clear about returns.

    When I'm ordering anything online, I even check who the delivery company will be.

    I like to buy on line as the regulations that are enforced are good, however I always check the returns policy before purchasing.
    The rules I apply are;
    1. Are the returns free of charge to me, even if I change my mind?
    2. Is the company based in the UK?
    3. Does the company accept PayPal
    Not sure if this helps, but it's how I do things
