“The EU has put a system in place to share driver details across borders, for some safety-related driving offences:
It only applies where the offender isn't penalised while still in the country
It only applies to specific, road safety-related offences:
Speeding
Drink/drug driving
Seatbelt/crash helmet
Red light/forbidden lane, and
Mobile phone offences
The UK joined the system for new offences committed after 6 May 2017
What does this mean?
Basically, if you commit one of the listed offences and the authorities in another country request your details, then DVLA will now have to provide them.
The new regulation (SI 2017/554) requires the DVLA to provide details of the registered keeper/owner at the time of the alleged traffic offence if the authorities in another EU country contact DVLA within 12 months of the date of the alleged offence with:
Details of the alleged offence (date, time, location)
Vehicle registration number
Vehicle category and, if known, its make and model”
A suspected offender will then receive a letter from the authorities in the country where the offence took place, to warn of the legal consequences if the fine isn't paid.
Hope this helps0 -

You won't get points, but you will get a fine from the French authorities. If you were in a hire care the hire company will also charge you an admin fee for passing on your details.0

It really is pot luck as some people never hear anything after being caught and others get a fine, often about six months after the event.
As others have said there seems no system in place for the French authorities to get points onto a UK licence.
UK expats who live in France can keep using their UK licence but if caught speeding must change to a French one and are then given the points.0 -
My wife has been flashed twice for speeding in France (2013 and 2016) and we never heard anything about it on either occasion. Both times I was asleep in the passenger seat so not sure if she was actually speeding or not but it did wake me up! First time it was a hire car, second time ours.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080

Had a lovely holiday in France late August 2018 and forgotten all about it until received two speeding fines today. Both for 45Eu. For travelling a walking pace over the limit. Probably a fair cop, but 6 months later!!!!???0
