Didnt know where to post this so here goes.
On 8th May last year I bought a LITEON 5045GDL+ dvd recorder. After I had it over a year I did a clear out and threw away my receipt. Now the recorder is broken but I have just found out it is covered by a 2 year manufacturers warranty (something to do with bad reliability of thier DVD drive units).
So after contacting LITEON I was told I would need the receipt as proof of purchase. As I dont have the receipt they said they cant repair it. I also told them the manufacture date of the machine is March 2006 so was still clearly under 2 years old but they dont want to know. I have since tried Argos who say thier machines only go back 3 months and I would need to contact head office. So before I head off armed with all my statements and stuff can anybody tell me if I will be able to get a receipt from almost 18 months ago??
Thanks

do you have any other proof of purchase?

I have the bank statement showing the transaction. I quoted the Consumers Law that states a bank statement could be used as proof of purchase but now Liteon wont reply to me.0 -
You could just get a new reliable writer for about £20.0

How's that going to help OP watch/record DVD's on his TV?:D0 -

I genuinely don't know if that applies in this case. The consumer law you're looking at is probably part of your rights against the retailer, whereas you're claiming against the manufacturer's warranty, which although forms part of your contract AFAIK, I guess they could stipulate any rules they like.
I think the point is if you show a retailer a bank statement they can cross-reference against their records to see if 'Argos store X, 8th May 06, £80' to at least narrow it down to a few transactions, but the manufacturer has nothing to cross-reference to.

Its not because they are unreliable its because they choose to give a 2year warranty as standard.
If they manafactuer knew they were dodgy they would only give a 1 year warranty wouldnt they0 -

From Argos H/O yes. Your local Argos store manager can speak to Argos H/O and get one faxed from their receipt records database, but they can take several hours to find it (as i found out last time i tried). Personally i would go with phoning Argos H/O myself and have one posted to me.
However why not take the machine to argos for them to send to Lite-on for repair. Argos are happy with bank statements as PoP and it would save you on postage costs.

I have heard on a review site that Liteon are unreliable about dealing with returns at the best of times, anyone else found this? Somewhat invalidates the point of having a 2 yr warranty.0
