The OP hasn’t actually said they are moving, just that they are selling a property, which worded like that I suspect means they are not moving.

Anyway goodness knows why they want tto hang on to a bit of paper but I agree they should just get a move on be that passport or driving licence.

+1 for sorting driving photocard & it's worth picking the post office for having the digital booth ready - for all of an extra 4-5 quid the whole thing is done, to their standard & submitted electronically. Need I say I found their digital systems went a zipload faster than the paper ones?

If it's your desired house, tolerate a grim photo - you can always try again when you change address after all - and get the sale through!

One disadvantage of photo licences is that they have to be renewed every 10 years.

Hardly onerous. If you have a passport, it can be done online - and it's minimal cost. £17, once a decade. £1.70/year. 3p/week.

Ah yes, well spotted, in that case, this is better:

If we have to will get passports as we will probably need them next year.
  • The photo ID will be required by the Estate Agent and the Solicitor acting for the sellers. It is to avoid fraud. I understand they are legally obliged to carry out this check. There is a list of documents that are acceptable, while the top 2 to confirm your ID are passport or photo driver's licence, there are other items on the list - eg a tax document from HMRC containing your name and address. Ask for more details of what is acceptable.

So you are going to move
Your current driving licence will change to a photo one when you notify change of address (as said above).
Why don't you simply make the change now and deal with passports as a separate issue if and when you need them?
Mountain out of a molehill I think.

Sorry to hijack the thread but is photo id absolutely necessary to sell a house? We are helping my brother in law to sell his house after his mother passed away (jointly owned with her) but he has no passport and suffers from epilepsy so cannot get a driver's license. Need to know if we have to get him a passport as it's very unlikely he will ever go abroad.

I can't imagine you can sell without some form of photo ID, I had to provide mine to the estate agent and solicitor. But maybe speak to the solicitor involved as they might be able to work with some sort of signed confirmation from a doctor as it's unusual circumstances.

Still more expensive than the paper licence - up to £85 over a lifetime
    Plus, I don't have a passport

  • Not sure why anyone would 'rather' hold on to the paper licence. Get a photo ID, you will need it for a lot of things.
