It's be the last time I buy an expensive item from them though.
Your rights will not change if you go to a different retailer!
They may offer you the full amount, but they do not have to. You've asked what you are entitled to, anything beyond that is at the retailer's discretion.0 -
I am in a similar situation.
My TV developed a fault after 2 months of purchase. I reported it to Argos who advised me to go to the Manufacturer. The Manufacturer sent someone to inspect it and decided not to repair and I have a letter saying that Argos can "replace or refund at their discretion".
My circumstances have changed and no longer need the TV so really need the refund to be agreed. What are my rights? Can I dig my heels in to get a refund?0 -

You can’t force them to refund if they want to replace, if they do agree to a refund, as it is less than six months since purchase, you would be entitled to a full refund, but they can insist on a replacement.
Although if they do insist on replacement you then have a brand new TV you could sell on if you no longer need it.0 -
I believe a lot depends on what they have in stock and their arrangements with the manufacturer / supplier. Exchanging can often be at no cost to them because they may be able to return the dead set. If they have to pay for the new set and have to dispose of the old one then a refund may be cheaper for them. I had this with one of their own brand TVs and they refunded no quibble.0
