Some questions...

I am 21 years old, earn £20k per year (OTE 35,000), have been with NatWest () for 8 years (student o/d £1200) plus Barclays student account (with £1200 o/d), live with my fiance as a private tenant in the home he owns for 1yr 7 months, have a CC with NW with a pitiful £350 limit (£100 spent), have never missed a payment on a credit account and am on the electoral roll.

According to Money Supermarket, my credit rating is fair.

Last month I applied for a HSBC CC and was turned down (I now realise it's because they wanted Excellent credit scores) and am looking to apply for a CC that suits my rating eg. Sainsbury's.

Questions...

1) Should I wait for longer before I apply as they'll see the HSBC footprint?
2) Should I ask NW to increase my limit/match the 0% for new customers or i'll leave and risk them doing another check and/or saying no?
3) Give up and pay of my o/d's before I apply again?

How do they view O/D's generally?

Someone please help!

  • Have you asked Nat West to increase your limit?
Is your old student debts now paid off?

Ignore all of these companies who give you a 'score' (especially if they charge) they are there to make money and the score does not mean a thing.
Get a copy of your credit files from Experian - they will cost you £2.

This will give an accurate assessment of your credit history.

I think I have answered your questions albeit in a roundabout way.
  • i have copies of my credit files and all are fine. did not pay for the assessment; you can do it as you search for CC's - Martin recommends it!

Have not asked NW to increase my limit yet as I wanted to know if this would put another footprint on my credit score.

I am still a student and still have the o/ds but they're not costing me anything.

Do you have a financial association (joint current account, etc) with your fiance, and if so is his credit file in good order?

    BTW, that's a cracking salary for a 'student'! ;)
  • no joint association and i honestly am a 3rd year law student, just work bl**dy hard alongside it! :)
  • If you have 2 student accounts which will be visible to the credit reference agencies and a credit card - another credit card application will not look good.
Good luck with your studies but I would forget getting any more credit until you graduate.
Not many students earn anything like £20k per annum so if you can't budget with that sort of income there is no hope for you!
