Technology £ for £ tends to drop in price. Both Microsoft and Sony are in direct competition with similar products in a price driven market place. It is not unreasonable for prices to continue to drop.

My gut feeling is that the XBox One S is cheaper to build than the XBox One was therefore prices have been able to drop relatively quickly.

And lets be honest, the big money for Sony and Microsoft is in the games not the consoles hence market share is the driving force

Consoles do have price cuts. I just wouldn’t expect them to go below £200 unless they needed to in an attempt to improve sales.

    Ever heard of competition.

If you where a manufacture would you like to see your competitors console under the Christmas tree?

You really don't know much about business do you.

But there is usually a limit. That is the thinking behind my £200 point.

Once the companies have the base design, modifications are minimal in expense compared to the outlay for the base design. Which means that they can be sold for cheaper.

Plus lowering the price can enable them to sell more units which in turn can give them a cheaper unit price.

It will be interesting to see how the x compares with the pro sales wise. Pros had a year heads start & benefit of lower price but is definitely the inferior model spec wise. Plus I'm curious on whether it will live up to the hype as a console that is comparable with a high end gaming pc. If so, its price is extremely cheap. A few mods and you're looking at a hybrid gaming console/pc for the price of a budget pc.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Anyone can pick a figure out of thin air. Why pick £200? Why not £210 or £190 instead. You've made a wrong uneducated guess.

No, just an opinion. I am sure you have a similar view but with a different figure because I am sure you dont think they would sell them for £1.

It's nowhere close to a high end gaming PC although to be fair, it's barely more than the cost of a midrange graphics card so that's understandable. The graphics card gets a massive boost compared to the original XBox One, on paper it looks to be a Polaris design with similar numbers to the AMD RX480 (and in turn the GTX 1060). The processor cores however only get a slight performance boost despite the fact that the Atom-class Jaguar cores in the original Xbox One are low power and low performance.

This means while the Xbox One X should easily be able to manage much higher resolutions as that is purely reliant on the graphics card but on games that are CPU heavy, it means the X won't be able to offer better, smoother framerates. For example, Gears of War 4 runs at 60fps on the original Xbox One in its PvP mode but in the PvE Horde mode where there's far more enemies, base defences etc. it runs at just 30fps. The game is getting an X update to allow it to run at 4k but limited CPU means Horde mode remains at 30fps. A midrange gaming PC which has vastly more powerful processor cores, can run Horde mode at 60fps or higher. High end gaming PC's are now pushing for 120 fps and above for very fluid, smooth gaming.

Microsoft could have opted for the new AMD Zen cores which are are high performance desktop cores and would have enabled better framerates across the board and giving 1080p owners a bigger upgrade but that would have been a significant increase in price and thermal consumption, given the console has a more limited potential that would likely have killed the market for it entirely. Also while 4k is an easy sell, framerate upgrades are not.

Not that any of this really matter, the comparison to a high end gaming PC is just to sound good for marketing. The X is still a substantial upgrade over the S and I don't think it's ever really consoles vs PCs, many people have both and for many people even if the consoles aren't quite as powerful as PCs the additional convenience is easily worth it.

I am hoping the Play Anywhere scheme will be expanded though as it's limited right now, Gears of War 4 isn't just a great PC port (aside from only being available on the Windows store) but the seemless integration with Xbox services works very well making it easy to play with Xbox One users and use features like party chat. As I don't have a 4K TV nor planning to get one, I'll probably be sticking with my original Ones for now.

The Xbox One S is cheaper to build than the original Xbox One as the processor and graphics card are manufactured on a smaller process which makes them cheaper to manufacture and more power efficient which in turn means less heat.

Microsoft made a mistake with the original PS2-era Xbox as they chose Intel who wouldn't let them have the processor license so they couldn't ever produce a smaller, cheaper Xbox as Sony had done with their consoles. With the 360 and the One, MS ensured they had the rights they needed to allow them to shrink the processor/GPU in time to produce smaller, cheaper and more power efficient consoles.

You're entirely right about the games, it's likely they're still making a loss on the consoles to get the hardware out the door and people buying games on their platform.

  • thanks for replies guys, looks like i was a week or two late for the tesco deal with extra controller 3 month card and fifa 18, that would have been perfect for him, i even went into the local tesco and they had the little tickets out with the deal still so i went to the customer service desk, the guy picked it all out and then couldnt get the price down to £250 as he said the bundle had finished!
his bday the 2nd week in november so still have a few weeks to keep my eyes peeled but its looking like tesco followed by game who are doing the best bundle deals.

Only for there being an unpalatable loss for Microsoft on each console, I'd say they'd cheerfully sell them for £1 if they could.

I dont think they make the consoles to make money - the real money is in the games. The consoles merely provide a user base to sell games to.

They are most likely making a loss even at £200, or £190 or whatever but its about getting consoles out there and market share. I've no doubt we'll see XBox One S's at £129 at some point - once even great economies of scale come in to play. No doubt with Sony price matching.
