Buying a new sofa?

Hi all,

I’m a discharged BR with a IPA but do not pay anything to it any longer as it was deemed I had no surplus income.

My question is, we’re moving property and our sofa does not fit in it so going to have to get a new one. Am I allowed to go into DFS and try and buy one through them hopefully taking advantage of their interest free credit option?

Regards

  • if you have no surplus income for the ipa how can you afford a credit agreement? £2000 of furniture, £40 a month?

If you are still under an ipa then your surplus will go towards that. The OR demands all change of circumstances will require them to be notified.

you're allowed (100%) to try, but credit check ? I suspect computer will say no.

As others have said, getting credit might be an issue... whether you can afford it or not.

How long have you been discharged? You might be ok several years after, but not if still recent.

You could look at any facebook groups/shpok... Sofas can go for peanuts second hand.

The OR is not interested in you buying what you need - they are only interested in a change of circumstances/income. If you are able to scrape together enough to buy a new sofa from within your budget then that's absolutely fine. However, your chances of getting credit to buy it are slim to zero for the next few years I'm afraid.

Try ebay - we were looking for a sofa and got a fabulous one for £100 and its the sort of quality we would never have been able to afford if we'd bought new.

Agreed - we got a 8 months DFS sofa from facebook group... cost us £150 and was excellent condition.

I think you can justify that it's needed but doubt you will get credit for it.
    Debt 1/1/17 - Credit Cards £17,280.23; overdrafts £3,777.24
    Debt 5/1/18 - Credit Cards £3,188; overdrafts £0
  • I’ve got rid of sky tv and only saving £30 a month by doing it so that’s why I was asking about getting a sofa from that money I’m saving. I will have a look at some of the eBay sites and Gumtree but I want something that will come with a warranty in case anything goes wrong.

Not much will go wrong with a sofa in my opinion, and credit will be hard to come by if B.R is still showing on your credit file.
Also check out some charity shops Heart Foundation clean all theirs before sale.
  • Hi guys,

My wife’s father has given us £2000 so am I ok to use that to buy a sofa?

Do I have to declare cash like that to the OR?
