Don't you mean "My wife’s father has given her £2000"?0 -

My wife’s father has given us £2000 so am I ok to use that to buy a sofa? Yes
Do I have to declare cash like that to the OR?
No you don't, It's not income and you are discharged.BBC WatchDog “if you are struggling with an unfair parking charge do get in touch”
Please then tell us here that you have done so.0 -
Wow - £2K to buy a sofa...are you sure?! That's a mighty expensive sofa in anyone's book. However, if that is what the gift is for then way to go - there is no problem with that.0

Why would you assume that?
My parents gave us some money decades ago, they didn't say we are giving you (meaning me) this money, they gave it to both of us.0 -
We have a Sue Ryder charity shop, they have some very nice sofas in there at a reasonable price. I bought 4 piece suite from a friend ten years ago for £50, that will see me out till the end.

IlonaI love skip diving.

I don't want to lecture, just question have you considered an alternative? I stupidly used a credit card to buy furniture when I got my first place then ended up defaulting. I'm guessing you don't have much spare cash right now so why get into more debt?
You could get a second hand one really cheap ( possibly free from a recycling website) until you save up to buy what you want with cash. Did you really mean £2,000 not £200? There are new sofas available for £150 if you search online. IKEA etc do well priced sofas.0 -

I think the point was that the wife was not subject to any BR restrictions and the OP might be - but as it was a gift anyway (as opposed to income) it doesn't matter either way.0 -
That is a lot of money for a sofa.
A few years ago, we bought a leather sofabed from John Lewis and it was £650, which was pushing the boat out for us. It is only the second sofa we have bought in twenty seven years.0
