Dunelm refund on my wife's card

I have just visited my local dunelm to return some items bought on Saturday using my wife's card only to be that my wife needs to be present. Surely a credit back to the card is not a risk? The staff said they were told it was against the Data Protection act but they were not at risk of reading any data regarding my wife, only I was if someone saw me enter her PIN. The staff member did say that they had no problem with me buying on my wife's card or they could give me a credit note which if I was a fraudster would have made my day. What on earth are they thinking of? It is in their T & C's as protection for their customers!

Why did you even tell them it was your wifes card? I do it all the time, they don't even look at the card let alone pull me up even when they do.

It's also nonsense what they say, it's not illegal to use someone else's card with their permission. It may however be company policy, if so then there is nothing you can do about that.

If it's your wife's card you aren't supposed to know the pin.

Why didnt your wife go and return the items ?

No your not meant to share the PIN for bank cards but people do.

What if your wife were to withdraw every last penny she could and then disappear, you would be left with no money all because she knew the PIN for the card.

Same here, John. There’s not many of us left, mate. :(
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • More places are looking at the original receipt and asking for same card to credit back to from the last 4 numbers present. I know Argos and B&Q do it. Frustrating as comes from same account, just 2 different card numbers but stops fraud. Read an article where thieves are picking up receipts discarded in car parks and going in to the store to pick one of items then going to customer service to get a refund claiming changed mind and had the receipt. Hence why now it's back to original card.

I returned an item to B&M in the last month, she processed the card and then said I needed to sign the refund slip and she needed to check it against the signature strip on the card - which was blank!

I offered to sign it there and then but that wasn't acceptable, neither was an offer of my driving licence.

I wonder if I could have left the store, signed the card and gone in again. Unfortunately only one till was available for refunds so I didn't attempt that. My husband returned it in the end.

of course you can, you just waive any rights to refunds for fraud because you've disclosed your pin to a 3rd party
