Just to say the floppy was the problem. I downloaded Eraser which had the option to download dban onto a floppy,and this one worked!!

I don't think charity shops are allowed to take electrical goods due to H&S concerns.

I've been on freecycle and someone is coming this afternoon to pick it up. I've also got rid of other bits easily this way.

Many shops have a notice in the window saying "We do not take electrical goods".
The reason is goods have to be tested, not all shops are able/can't be bothered with the hassle.
