Hi there,

I am going around in circles trying to work this out. We currently drive a Nissan Juke (PCP, monthly payments of £200, balloon payment due in Feb of £7400) and a Golf estate (company car used for all of our family trips). My husband is changing jobs so will no longer have a company car but a £7000 car allowance. After tax I think this gives us £338 a month.

He will be very close to home so it wont be so important for me to drive a reliable, nice new car - although i LOVE my Juke and will be very sorry if it goes. We will however need one car which can get our family of 4 (and all of our stuff) to France a couple of times a year.

I have looked at PCP, lease, loans, etc and have no idea what our best option is. We only have my Juke as a trade in and are happy to throw another few thousand at it but dont want to reach too far into our emergency fund. We'd like a 'nice' car but dont want to be silly about it.

If anyone has any suggestions of current car offers or what works for your family I would love to hear them. In my ideal world the £338 would pay for us to have the two cars but I am yet to work that out. Oh and i love the idea of electric but they are too expensive to have as our 2nd car and dont go far enough for our main car.

Thank you!

If you only need a large car for a couple of trips a year why not hire for that.

My starting point - that £7k fuel allowance, if it's an allowance then how many miles is he going to be expected to drive for that?

Plus - does the allowance come with a requirement that his car has to be less than ?? years old?

That might steer you to new/used, how critical fuel economy is etc.

Sorry! Car allowance not fuel allowance. I will have a go at editing that now.

There is no requirements as far as i am aware (i will double check that).

    Thank you!

Remember you have £7400 + outstanding on the Juke which either you pay off or dealer pays it off from a trade in figure. Depending on the value for trading in that may or may not cover the outstanding balance.

PCP deals have a mileage limit on them so be careful what you sign, especially if you intend driving to France twice a year.

You need to clarify and write down what your options are, i.e. each scenario. Then decide the criteria for making a decision (e.g. least cost, seats 4, use for France) and score each option (1-3) against the criteria and see which one fits best - you might have an overall winner. If not, go back to the criteria and thrash out which is most important and multiple the scores by 2. Seriously, it will stop you going round in circles even if it seems a bit overkill.
