Scottish Gas

Options
Okay,

So I have been visiting a friend going through a rough time.
A proud man who will not really take help.
He did let slip his gas was way over due and a warrant to fit a payment meter was due.
This adds another £285 or so to his bill of £290.

Without his permission I called up to pay this (slate me if you wish)
I had his account no. and know his address/DOB.

When I called i made it clear I wasnt the account holder.
Couldnt discuss the account with me.............until I said I was calling to clear the bill. Then suddently it was all good and the CS rep even went through previous failed direct debits.

After payment CS rep offered to set up a new account for me so I could deal with the bill in future!
I'll be contacting Scottish gas to discuss this as failed direct debits are none of my business, nor is it right to offer to tag me to someones account just so they can secure payment.

  • Did you pay by card and it's now linked their account?
I'd be more worried about that.

I used an account I keep for bill paying. so I only transfer cash in when needed.
Thankful I did now with their loose data protection style!

Agreed - should have got you to tell them how much you wanted to pay and that was it.

If he does look for help (or any other readers) try http://www.charisgrants.com/application-forms/ - a few suppliers have funds set up for this - and they'd rather their customers used the money to pay them than any excess funding was redistributed more widely.

Did a test today (to see if it was one rogue rep)
No problem telling me the outstanding bill amount (new billing cycle) and me paying it today with the same details and making it clear I'm not the account holder.
no offer of a new account today though!

Data protection still only applies if they are not going to make money out of it.

Well whatever it was it was nearly a year ago, so I'd ask what do you hope to gain by dragging it up again?
