Brick and Flint wall

I recently moved into a barn conversion. One room has an exposed brick and flint wall, which really makes the room dark. I have seen houses where they have painted the brick and flint on the outside which really looks horrible and I wondered if anyone had applied a lime wash or similar to brighten up an interior brick and flint wall. I was also wondering about having someone plaster over part of the wall, so it looks as though the brick and flint has been exposed. Please help with ideas!
