Decorating quote

Options
Is this a fair quote?
£340 for painting my hallway stairs and landings(three story)
Includes;
Hall way (decent size)
2 sets of stairs
10 doors
All skirting and spindals
Ceilings

I was expecting to pay more than that, cautious of biting his hand off!
He has some good recommendations on his facebook page.

I am struggling to get anyone else to even give me a quote, all too busy!

That is really cheap. Ridiculously so. Be careful!

It can tell a tale when everyone is too busy except one very cheap one...

I'd just like to congratulate you on your sensible attitude to this. Unfortunately many here seem to complain about the price of jobs, never once considering that a price can be far too cheap for a good job.

Potentially this quote is for putting paint on these areas....but I think I would be questioning the type of preparation that is probably also required.

I can't even see how 10 doors on their own could be painted for that money.

No prep on doors, they are fairly new never been painted. Just standard coated doors.

Based on his reviews and the money I was considering giving it a go.
How much should I be looking at?

He says it's one days work for 2 men. Which considering other prices I have heard circa £120 a day that seems about right?

    Fixed that for you.

So he thinks that 1 person can paint 5 doors, half the skirting in your hallways and stairs, half a large hallway, and half the spindles for your staircase in a single day.

If they can do that they wont need to wash their brushes, as they'll have been throwing the paint straight from the pot.

Yup. I've had some fairly cheap quotes recently but nothing like that and I'd be wondering about the quality of work.

How do they plan to protect the flooring....or is it an empty house?

Are you providing all materials ?

My guess is it will cost you more to put right a bad job after.....

If not ....and you are pleased with the finish....post us some pics....I'm sure there would be lots of posters who would happily say we were wrong.

I'd avoid that quote too. Decorators can (and should) be booked up for a couple of months. Best thing is to get a recommendation and wait for them to have some availability for the work.

    This was a recommendation!

I have had a quote from another person, just a one man band. His quote based on time and people to complete was exactly the same! He had recommendations too, and was also available in the next 2 weeks. Do I avoid him as well?!

Just to add, I am in Yorkshire, so that may make a difference?

Also I as I stated, he is booked up. And he isn't doing it tomorrow its in a few weeks. Because it isn't a big job he said he was do it on a Saturday if that suited us.

    House is empty.

So 2 quotes pretty much the same, struggling to get any other quotes. One didn't respond and one said new year, but he had no recommendations?

Well...maybe we all need to move to your neighbourhood....it's got cheap and hopefully good trades people!

In all seriousness I guess it's a case of going with the quote you find personally more agreeable.

Where are the recommendations coming from....online reviewing by unknowns or by personal recommendations from people you know and therefore may have seen examples of both sets of workmanship?

Make sure before work is booked in that you are completely sure about what you are actually getting for your money....one coat,2 coats, dustsheeting, prep work etc...method of payment and whether there is a snagging service after.

but out of interest .....you did say in your opening post that you had expected the quotes to be more....go on let us in on the figure you had in mind.....

    Best of luck.
