Damp Patches on the Carpet

I wonder if someone can assist me with a rather unusual problem.

In the last two weeks we have noticed wet patches in 3 separate rooms in the house. These have now dried, but the carpets are a bit smelly. At the same time the toilet started leaking, so when the plumber finally arrived today we asked him to look at all of the problems.

Well, the toilet needs replacing (which we thought) and one of the leaks he thinks is from the roof but the 2 in the bedrooms he just can’t fathom. One of the leaks is in our 8 year old son’s room, and the plumber asked if he had perhaps split a drink? When we said no, he said ‘well has he being weeing on the carpet’??? DS has never had any toilet problems, so I was really surprised when he said this.

Of course DS really denies it but DH is now convinced this is the solution. I’m not sure but if the plumber can’t see any other reason then I just don’t know.

Does anyone have any experience of an 8 year weeing on the carpet?

    Yes...

A friend is a foster carer and one of her children wee's on the carpet out of spite.

However, I think you would know if it was wee.

Exactly, the carpets smell very foosty, but wee has a smell all of its own doesn't it?

    Thanks for your reply though.

Is it possible you have a tom cat getting in - this happened to us once, years ago.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • it really is baffling, but in saying that, my daughters told me two weeks after my nephews (6 year olds) had been along that one of them had peed in their pirate ship? right enough it did have something wet in it that wasn't water? but i can't imagine an 8 year old doing that? myabe he did it in his sleep, (wild guess but my ex used to pee in the cupboard in his sleep when little)? is the dampness near any windows? could it be a leak from that?
    totally a tog!:D

My 8 year old daughter did wee on her carpet from age 7 onwards. I've got no idea why  and when we asked her she'd deny having done it. It took us a long while to work out why her carpet was wet despite the smell as we didn't think she would do something like that.

My daughter does have some problems with obsessions and is currently being assessed for Aspergers but we never really got to the bottom of it. When we realised what she was doing we checked her room every morning (she always did it during the night) and soon realised that it always happened when something hadn't gone to plan for her. Either being told off or being in trouble or she may have had a bad day at school. She didn't know how to explain her feelings so this seemed to be her way of getting it out of her system (excuse the pun)

I'm not suggesting your son has aspergers but maybe there are some other problems he doesn't know how to deal with . Either that or he has just spilled something?

    Thanks for all your help.

Just remembered that during a warm spell a while ago we had the back door open and next door's cat got in......wonder if he did it?

DS is a bit tearful saying he would never do anything like that and we both now believe him.

I'm going with the cat theory.

    Thanks all!
  • It's not unusual for children to wee on carpets - it's usually to do with them not wanting to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, they don't seem to associate going to the loo with being dirty in any way lol. Probably best just to give him the benefit of the doubt to but keep an eye on him. Male cats tend to 'spray' in other people's houses - to mark it as territory - but not wee in a big patch on the carpet unless they are locked in a room. Cat spray has a distinct smell and you wouldn't be able to miss knowing what it was if you smelt it.

My step brother used to do this all the time in his sleep, maybe he has but doesn't know he's done it? Either way if it has'nt happened since I'd stop worring about it.

is the carpet - rubber backed.....

when we moved into our old house, the rubber backing was disintegrating due to age (and pee - long story - used for renting to single parents)

the rubber/wee had got into the floorboards, whenever it was wet (i think - it was definately temperature related) there would be damp patches on the floorboards which stank....... upon closer inspection (ie sniffing), only when i had cut the peices of wood oout did the problem (and smell go)
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
