Went to measure up on our property having agreed a price etc. Before now, id been offered tea or coffee when I came to view, this time...

Abrupt, rude, moaned about price we had got the property for...

I've rather read first paragraph as interpreted = you've had more than 2 viewings before you went to measure up and they felt they'd allocated all the time/"energy" they'd bargained on to your viewings and this was time/"energy" they didn't have available spare.

Abrupt could mean that they had, reluctantly, made some extra time available over and above standard number of viewings - but had an appointment they had to go onto just after having made some time available again for viewing purposes. You don't indicate whether you turned up bang on time or no for this viewing......

People do have A Life (even if they are in the process of house-selling).

This happens - I'm just having to be a bit "abrupt" in two different directions right now - because other people are expecting more time/"energy" from me for things than are usual/I've bargained on and there isnt the time/"energy" to spare for them wanting this. I've worked out the demands are down to their assumptions in one case/mistakes in another case - hence abrupt...

I think you may have a share of responsibility for this - from having made assumptions without checking first with them.

This reinforces my long-held belief that it is best for buyers and sellers to be kept as far apart from one another as possible, and certainly should never be allowed to meet!

I have no doubt that there are examples where seller has become best friends with buyer, and the transaction went through without a hitch, but my experience suggests this is rare.

I would generally agree. solicitors and EAs are the best intermediaries as they keep the transactions on a professional level and keep the emotion out of it.
We are in the process of buying a property at the moment which we really had to fight to get our offer accepted on. Part of that involved the vendor wanting to actually speak with us, and whilst I'm sure without those conversations we wouldn't have had our offer accepted, it has been quite stressful, they are panicky stressful sellers and been pushing all the time.

Well - there have been instances where seller and buyer got on so well together with each other that they landed up married to each other:rotfl:

But - I would agree personally - and honestly "didnt want to know" re any contact with the buyer of my last house. I just left it all up to the EA - after all I was having to pay them good money for the service.

...I swiftly reminded her, no one forced you to accept and I've not done it as a favour...then left!!

Haha. Bizarre and caught me slightly off guard! I also have a satisfied feeling I've negotiated well, but is this common practice??

    Too funny.......:rotfl:

How many times have you been round there to view?

  • This is another reason not to keep having repeat viewings after you've decided you want to buy the place.

Measuring up can be done on completion!

Vendors can be funny folks... I remember back in the late 80's my parents found their dream house, although it was very dated and a not very competitively priced they still offered full asking price straight off the bat as they were so keen on it.

With the offer accepted they got the ball rolling with searches and surveys etc but everything seemed to go very quiet and no progress appeared to be getting made and they couldn't get any answers out of the EA or solicitors as to the reason for the delay.

My dad then bumped into the vendors in the garden centre and very politely asked them if they knew why nothing seemed to be progressing... the vendor told him ''we've decided not to sell and even if were we wouldn't sell to you if you were the last people on earth'' !!!

I'm going to hazard a guess that you don't know the full story on that one.

I do wonder that but I'm pretty confident that was the full story, my dad was as puzzled and bemused as anyone. The vendors were rather odd... carpet on the garage floor, tv covered with tea towel when not in use and showing me and my sister (aged 15 & 14) the ''magic fairy lights'' when we went along for the second viewing. (the magic fairy lights were just car headlights going over a hill in the distance)
