Hi
We've got an entire house to paint & it's new plaster.

We're busy poring over the various colour charts but they all have similar colour ranges.

Does anyone have any knowledge as to which are the best to apply or which to avoid ?

The likes of Wilkinson paints are cheaper but does it give as good a coverage as say Dulux? No point buying cheaper paint if you need twice as much !

Paints we’ve used in our house, a quick review:

Little Greene Intelligent Matt - very nice paint, expensive, lovely colours, is wipeable as claimed but not scrubbable. Relatively easy to apply but needs good technique to avoid roller marks.

Little Greene Eggshell - used on all of our woodwork. Really nice finish. Easy to use.

Valspar Premium - great coverage and good value. Looks patchy after first coat, excellent after second. Is indeed scrubbable and having had to repair some wall damage it touches up invisibly (light colours do anyway). Easy to apply.

Earthborn Clay Paint - lovely paint to use, lovely colours and beautiful flat matt finish. Has absolutely zero durability. The slightest mark will stain. You cannot touch up dark colours without it showing but you can touch up light colours reasonably well. Would not recommend if anywhere it could get marked. They now have a wipeable “lifestyle” paint and I’m about to repaint our dining room after only 2 years with it (same colour). Would not generally recommend.

Dulux standard vinyl matt - only used white, seems ok. Nothing special.

Overall I’d happily recommend either Valspar or Little Greene.

Whatever you use, don't be afraid to add water, even on the final coat. Dulux matt emulsion is so thick and gloopy it's horrid and after adding probably around 30% water it worked really well and looks great. Goes on smoother too.

For new plaster even if it's just skim coat I would mist coat with Leyland Superleytex or Johnstones Jonmat, this will allow the plaster to fully dry out.

If it was just a skim coat I would then go for the final finish paint, as mentioned earlier most big manufactures can copy colours, I have farrow and ball charlottes locks on one wall in my kitchen but Johnstones decorating centre mixed it up for me at a fraction of the cost and arguably better quality. If you want the flat farrow and ball finish Johnstones do a flat Matt too.

Farrow and ball is the only paint i would tell people to avoid. At least when you buy a £2 tin from wilkos you dont expect much. A £50 tin from F&B and you expect something to be given the same quality paint as the wilkos stuff.

Not dissing wilkso stuff in the slightest, its an ok paint. But you pay cheap prices. F&B is an ok paint with a nice colour range but you pay extortionate prices.

Top tip, take the f&b colour card you want to B&Q and get a tin of the stuff mixed in valspar. Good colour, fantastic paint and you havent spent 70% off your money on marketing and branding. Its a kin to apple and phones.

If you want the best paint go with valspar. If you want ok paints get any, theres not many paints that are truly rubbish any more. If you want to pay too much get F&B.

We recently had trouble finding the exact shade of mustard I wanted for the living room - we eventually stumbled across some Bergere paint in Home Bargains! It went on lovely and was great value. My husband (the poor bloke was the one who actually painted) said it was better than some mainstream brands (Dulux/Crown etc.) If you have a larger Home Bargains store near to you, it's definitely worth a look.

I wouldn’t put too much faith in colour matching services. There’s more to a paint’s colour than what an optical scanner will detect - the pigment content and paint’s finish can have a big impact on the final result. If you’re happy with close-ish then fine.

Even the original colour won't look exactly the same once it's on the wall.

We have exactly the same colour in the lounge and dining room - but as the rooms are linked and face east (dining room)/west (lounge) each room looks to be a slightly different colour.
