Hi Malthusian (and anyone else who may be able to help)
Re your reply above, I am wondering about the possibility of posting a cheque to the beneficiary 'care of' their bank. I have got a beneficiary who spent their life living on benefits, followed by sofa surfing and no fixed address, and staying in short term B&Bs. So they may have no official address at present.
Have you recently posted correspondence in this way to a bank? Do I have to check with the bank first?

When I talked about posting a cheque to your bank, I was talking about someone who has recently received a cheque, and can't easily travel to a branch, posting the cheque to their bank. Not a third party posting a cheque directly to their bank. (I brought it up purely to show that "I bank online / live a long way away from a branch" isn't a valid reason to request an executor pay your inheritance to a third party.)

As Yorkshireman said, absolutely no way should you do that. Despite my scepticism above, I accept there may be good reasons why they may not want the cheque to be deposited directly in that account.

Give them the cheque, get a receipt, and let them post it, or take it to Cash Converters, or stick it on their mantelpiece, or whatever, it's not your problem.
  • It's probably worth noting that since the high street banks have started closing their branches left right and centre, they have entered into an arrangement with the Post Office who at the moment still have reasonable national coverage. I can pay in cheques to my HSBC current account through my local Post Office.
  • Hi and thank you for your replies which are noted.
The beneficiary is not on benefits.
I will be seeking ID (official confirmation of address e.g. utility bill) before issuing a cheque. The beneficiary has a bank account but the address she gave is most likely a false address as she uses boyfriends' addresses for correspondence.
