I've no experience of that model Judith but here's a link to the manual that might explain the process. http://www.tp-link.com/support/download.asp?a=1&m=TL%2DWR541G

You don't need to understand it, just follow the instructions to set up wireless encryption using the WPA-PSK option. Basically you enter a PSK-Passphrase into your router and then the same PSK-Passphrase will need to be entered into your laptop to allow it to connect to your router. Your desktop is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable, so it is already secure.

Get a random 63 character passphrase form here and save it to a notepad file so that you can copy and paste it into the router and also into the laptop when required.

also where do i go to put the passphrase in on the laptop when ive done the desktop sorry to be so dim, but it is just going over the top of my head.

You don't do the desktop as it is connected via cable so is already secure. After enabling wireless encryption, you will be prompted to enter the passphrase when you try to connect to the router.

thanks for your helpps there was no instructions on how to do the encryption thanks again

See 5.5 of the manual. From your desktop:

    1. Change the SSID from the default TP-LINK to something different but not something that identifies you personally - just any random identifier.

    2. Select our region if it is incorrect

    3. Tick the 'Enable wireless security' box.

    4. Select WPA-PSK

    5. Paste in your PSK-Passphrase.

    6. Click Save to store the changes that you have made and the router will re-boot.

Your laptop should now see your new SSID and when you try to connect, you will need to paste in the passphrase before you will be able to connect.

You need to set-up your wireless encryption on the router using your desktop connected via the Ethernet cable.

Then your laptop will not be able to connect (like anyone else's - hence it's now secure) until you enter the required PSK-Passphrase when prompted.
