Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Looking at staying in an airbnb as we prefer that to hotels. Also means we can cook for ourselves if we find eating out too expensive or not enough choices (we are both vegetarian).

Hopefully for a short stay we will have little luggage so getting from the airport to wherever we are staying shouldn't be too difficult.

Meant to say, interesting that a poster said it is less crowded than London. Me and OH are both Londoners although we live in Essex now. We go back to London at least once a month and the crowds don't bother either of us. I imagined Venice to be far worse the way people talk about it

Venice in April is lovely. You'd probably need a sweater over a tee shirt, while the locals are still in jackets.

Avoid St Mark's Square after you've done the tourist bit.

I'd disagree with staying outside and being dependent on public transport. One of the pleasures of Venice is just mooching around, finding beautiful little squares and bars. This means it's easy to get get lost. If you're on the main island you can take your time to find your hotel.
