But there is sound from Chrome playing YouTube vids or windows activity sounds.
I've looked at all the obvious stuff like sound settings (no mute and mixer etc at max) and there are do conflicts in Device Manager.
Any suggestions please.

Simple things but have you checked, the settings in VLC? You can select different audio devices so you might have another one enabled in there or there area raft of Audio Settings under Tools>Preferences.
The fact its working on other software points to VLC rather than the machine.
Maybe a re-install of VLC will solve it0 -
Yes checked VLC, still no sound. And there's no sound in Media Player either...0

This is for bluetooth, but the general principle is the same...i am on a small screen and is not so easy to copy etcTo work around this behavior, set the Bluetooth audio device as the default audio device in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps:
Click StartStart button , and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound.
Under Sound, click Manage audio devices.
In the Sound box, click the Playback tab, select the Bluetooth device, click Set Default, and then click OK.

No sound in Media Player or VLC. Sound from other programs. Are you playing the same video in both these programs? Can you try playing an MP3 or something in them, it could be your particular video.0
