Doesn't its guarantee, guarantee against this?

yes it does, but usually on a missed connection the airlines sort it out at the airport and pretty quickly. However if separate tickets he would need to contact kiwi.com who may offer an alternate flight or a refund...I read a post recently where someone missed a connection, sorted out/paid for an alternate flight but nothing due back from kiwi as they did not contact them first and another who missed a connection and still waiting for a resolution over 24 hours later having watched a number of possible flights depart
sorry to be scaremongering but with unprotected connections, best to know what to expect/do if the worst happens
(TripAdvisor Air Travel forum have a number of kiwi threads)

It seems that the bags are sent on to the second stop as they are both with Etihad and have same PN? number. That means he only has to get from one plane to another in 90mins. So providing everything is on time then that would be fine. Fingers crossed.

If both flights are on the same ticket he will be fine, if Kiwi cobbled together separete tickets for him he might be in trouble. Next time do some research before you buy, it's not hard to find complaints about Kiwi.com and the way they piece together itineraries.

Just an update. Son has set off. Bags were put through first 2 flights as it was same airline. Change over was good as flight from manchester arrived 45min early. He's now in Ho Chi Minh awaiting flight to Beijing this is different airline so bags will have to be rechecked in but he has plenty of time. Thanks for everyone's replies. It's been a bit nerve wracking and wouldn't recommend it if you have another option.
