Halifax started charging interest with no warning

Options
I need a bit of advice, I finished uni over a year ago (July 2006), i have an outstanding student account balance of £1200 with the Halifax which was interest free, i recieved a statement from them last week as normal showing the usual balance etc, then today i recieved a second statement which said at the bottom 'amount to be debited next month £17.20'. I have been into the branch to dispute this as i have had no warning of the interest free period coming to and end but they told me that they dont have to give any notice and refuse to extend it by a couple of months to help me clear the balance without incurring the interest charges. Is there anything I can do?

When the original terms were offered, there would have been an expiry date noted. They do not need to notify you again that the free period expires.

Fair enough, I thought it was worth asking, I shall just have to pay it off as soon as I can, thanks for your help dunstonh.
  • You are allowed to have the student indicator/interest-free period for a year after you graduate. it would be expected that you would be now having your salary paid into the account or made some contribution to it to reduce it in the year since
