  • Well, I'm not much help cos my doors were only delivered yesterday but I bought the 4 panel pine ones from B&Q (Elveden range) and from what I see so far they look very nice.

No warping (if possible on doors?) and not too many knots (although I personally like to see a few knots for authenticity).

I got some plain solid pine ones and some 2 panel etched glazed pine ones which look lovely IMO.

Went with my mum on a Wednesday to buy them, to get the 10% crumblys discount :D

They were about £35-£45 per door roughly, depending on size. Wickes are similar price but of course no discount for OAP's so B&Q came out top.

Was told to try Howdens too, but I didn't bother cos I liked the pattern on the etched ones at B&Q.

    HTH! :)

We went for the cheaper knotty pine 6 panel doors from B&Q - I think about £20 exh, but often (always?) seem to have a 4 for 3 offer on. We've got ours all on now - just ready to stain then after a quick sand.

 B&Q first then. Doors definitely can and do warp and cheap ones from the sheds are prime candidates.

So does that mean we should not buy the cheap ones and go for a mid range ones????

I got mine from a local specialist door shop. The brand is lpd, and I'm very happy with them. My carpenter did say that some of the B&Q etc. brand could be "like bananas", so I didn't check those out.

  • We have a few of the B&Q 6 panel pine doors...and to be honest, I think I'd rather have spent more money on a better brand. They do warp very easily and on one of the doors, some of the joints came apart after it was hung. Although they did replace the door, it meant another weekend of hassle having to rehang and paint. We also have a few of the 15 panel glass doors which we bought from B&Q but aren't own brand and it was immediately obvious that it was much better quality. You get what you pay for I'm afraid.
  • if your in northern ireland goto the door store (excellent doors /good quality)
  • B&Q doors most certainly do warp..be careful when you buy them, make sure they are as flat as possible...get the lads there to lay each one out on the floor and check. When you get them home, if you aren't going to hang them immediately, try to store them flat. It will help to prevent warping.

In my experience with all things from B & Q you really have to look, pick and choose things like doors very carefully. Even the more expensive ones can be damaged or warped.

By the way, if you do buy the knotty pine ones, it's wise to treat each knot with knotting solution (you can get this at B&Q too, but sometimes cheaper elsewhere) otherwise you run the risk of the knot continuing to 'grow' and it will eventually fall out. 'Knot' saying that they'll all do this, but it can happen. We had a big untreated knot fall out of a door once. It made a very interesting talking point when people came to visit..it was in the loo door....!! :D

Look for the joinery / timber / builders merchants. Minds gone blank as far as manufacturers' names are concerned. I'll try and remember or look some up later and post back.
