can anyone give me some advice ...is been retired through ill health and having your employment terminated through illness the same thing ?

Nope, it is not.

To be retired on health grounds, occupational health would have judged you to be too ill to work.

If I say I am ill and never go back to work again, and occupational health doesnt consider my illness severe enough to warrant ill health retirement, then they will just give me the sack and I wouldnt be entitled to my pension.
