Economy 10 Heating

Hi all - hope someone can help! I have recently moved into a new house with economy 10 heating and currently with Eon, however they do not do a fixed tariff. Does anyone know of any other energy companies that do this tariff apart from EDF, N Power and SSE. Thank you in advance.

    Hi outofmydepth :rotfl:

Welcome back after joining over 4 years ago. albeit for the briefest of appearence, and congratulations on your second post :T

I'm sorry, I do not know of any supplier that offers an E10 tariff as a fixed tariff. Althgough the question is somewhat academic.

You appear to be on a legacy tariff. Only the legacy supplier is obligated to support this tariff, and most only have a single offering which, as far as I am aware, is a variable tariff. However, it is often very good value if you are taking maximum advantage of the legacy tariff they must continue to support.

Do not attempt to switch supplier if you are on a legacy tariff. Attempts to do so invariably end in tears.

Whilst there are a number of suppliers that provide E10 tariffs, the issue is that E10 from one supplier may not be the same as E10 from another. in fract it varies by supply region, so some suppliers like Eon who have bought/merged/taken over, etc the legacy supplier for more than one region may actually have more than one E10 version to support themselves (although I know Eon are commonising this because of the cost of continuing support - if this affects you, the supplier should have already been in touch with information on how they will continue to support your supply)

See you again in late 2021 perhaps?

    Hello outofmydepth.

Things have moved on a little from the information I gave in the link Hengus has posted. We've recently introduced a scheme where customers with complex/restricted meters like Economy 10 can opt for certain single rate unrestricted tariffs without the need to change the meter. This includes some of the fixed tariffs currently on our website.

For customers with restricted/complex meters, these are only available as single rate unrestricted tariffs. Cheaper off peak rates aren't available. To go on a fixed tariff with off peak rates, a new meter will be needed.

Customers with restricted/complex meters can only switch to a fixed single rate tariff by phoning us. They won't be able to switch online through our website or via a Price Comparison Site.

As footyguy says, restricted meters can work out better value if full advantage of the off peak times is taken. Our advisors will be able to let you know how these fixed tariffs compare with your current set up. You'll also be able to see how they stack up against other suppliers although you'll have to do this manually.

At the moment, this is very much a work in progress as we look to revamp our product range for customers with both restricted/complex and conventional credit meters. Hope it's useful outofmydepth.

Just to add that the recent changes that enable E10 customers to sign up to standard tariffs is a cross supplier change.

OP you can change to any standard tariff offered by any of the major suppliers. You are not restricted to E.On, but will have to ring up your chosen to supplier to actually switch.

As this change is relatively new (Sept '17), you shouldn't see the old issues with switching Footguy was referring to. The regulation changes have forced the issue to be properly dealt with.

I think this qusetion may be purely academic, as I can't understand why any MSEer who is receiving 5/12th (or thereabouts) of their energy at a discounted rate would elect to pay full price for all their electricity.

    But anyway, here goes...
How is another supplier expected to accept an MPAN that is specific to a DNO, rather than universal across the industry?
What happens if the customer at that address (who may not be the current customer) later decides they do not want to pay full price for all their electricity, but again wants to take advantage of low rates for about 5/12ths (or probably more) of their consumption?

Whilst there may well be new developments in this area, I can only repaet my golden rule to all those with such legacy metering in place... at least until you know better

Do not attempt to switch supplier if you are on a legacy tariff. Attempts to do so invariably end in tears.

I don't know as that would all be confidential information and each supplier would undoubtedly have their own solution, but they have to legally do it and that means there is always a level of interpretation. The basic rule set is:
    • Every customer on a complex metering set up must be allowed to swap onto a standard tariffs of any of the major suppliers.
    • There should be no charge levied at the customer for opting to do this.
    • If a customer can save by going onto one of their current suppliers standard tariff they must be informed of this on every bill, annual statement and price change letter
    • Customers must be able to access these rates without having a physical meter exchange
    • Customers must be able to switch back to their previous meter arrangements if they want.
    • The rulings cease to impact customer once they have a smart meter installed
    • The rulings only last until 2020

One of the companies I've worked for in the past already did most of this but they just manually billed everyone on an unsupported SSC. As there were so few people aware of this it wasn't a lot of work. Now there is going to be whole lot more people taking advantage of this, I'd be amazed if the systems haven't been automated.

These customer should also appear on the disengaged customer database so can be marketed by other suppliers offering them cheaper tariffs. Although the pot of customers probably isn't worth putting much effort into.
