Papering on new plaster

I have just had new stud walls skimmed and my son wants to paint his new room black. OH thought it might be best to paper with lining paper first so the black will be easier to remove later. Can I paper straight onto the new plaster?

No need to put paper on. Defeats the object of new plaster. I'd rather go for an extra coat of paint than spend ages wallpapering and potentially removing wallpaper, for certain. The likelihood is that you'd still just paint over the black anyway.

I've had very dark and/or bright colours on walls. They offen go in two coats, sometimes three. People don't seem to know this, but white is a difficult colour to cover as well!

while you can paint over it, any knocks or scratches and you get the dark colour coming through much easier.

I moved into a house with a black room, all the woodwork was black as well. Ended up ripping it all out and starting again.

OP if I was you, I would mist coat the walls first, then lining paper, then black paint, but doozer is right, modern paint has such good coverage that you could just paint straight on to the wall.

Builder said we couldn't paper new plaster, so I managed to stop Mrs B from wanting wallpaper till we moved out in 2007!!!

I wouldn't like to try and repaint over black. We painted our walls a pale green which looked like a public convenience, it took several coats of barley white to cover that up.

A previous house we had had been the show house. They had papered straight onto plaster. Took about 10 minutes per room to strip it, it turned out to only be stuck properly at top and bottom where it overlapped paint from the ceilings and skirtings. You couldn't tell though, it had been up about 10 years - that lovely blown vinyl.

I would always paint plaster with emulsion paint before hanging wallpaper.

Thanks all.
Son has already bought the paint on special offer. I thought a mist coat would be a good idea so will do that then stick the lining paper up.

I papered our newly skimmed hall...i slapped on a full coat of watery paste to the wall first then started hanging with another thicker coat. It's worked well.

If the walks are newly plastered and not painted yet definitely a mist coat of paint. After that size your walls. If you cannot find any size wallpaper paste should also have the amount of water to be added to make size on the back.

Newly plastered walks are very porous so ensure you have a good film of Paste on them ��
